Dedicated 240 volt circuits
A hot tub or a mini-split heat pump needs its own circuit from the panel, sized to the nameplate. Most hot tubs call for a 50 amp, 240 volt circuit on 6 gauge copper. Some smaller plug-in tubs run on 120 volts, and some larger ones need 60 amps. Mini-splits vary more: the outdoor unit's label lists a minimum circuit ampacity and a maximum overcurrent device, and we size the wire and breaker to those numbers, usually 15 to 30 amps at 240 volts. Nothing else shares the circuit. We confirm the panel has a two-pole space and the capacity before we quote.
Hot tubs: the GFCI disconnect within sight
The code requires a hot tub circuit to be GFCI protected and to have a disconnect within sight of the tub, at least five feet from the inside wall of the water. The usual way to meet both is a GFCI spa panel on the house wall or a post near the tub. From there, a conduit run carries the conductors to the tub's control box. The equipment grounding conductor has to be insulated copper, and anything metal within reach of the tub, like a handrail, gets bonded to it. We coordinate with your spa dealer so the tub has power on delivery day.
Mini-splits: disconnect, whip, and conduit
A mini-split outdoor unit needs a weatherproof disconnect mounted within sight of it and a liquid-tight flexible whip from the disconnect into the unit. The HVAC installer connects the line set and the communication wire to the indoor head. We handle the circuit from the panel to the disconnect, in conduit wherever it runs outdoors or through a garage, and we land the whip. Multi-zone systems draw more and sometimes need a 40 or 50 amp circuit. If the HVAC company has not given you the electrical requirements, send us the model number and we pull the specs.
Permits, inspections, and what drives the cost
A new 240 volt circuit requires an electrical permit in Prescott and the surrounding towns, and a hot tub circuit gets inspected before the tub is filled. We pull the permit and meet the inspector. On cost, the distance from the panel to the equipment is the biggest factor, followed by how the run gets there: through an attic, along a wall in conduit, or across a yard in a trench. The circuit size sets the wire and breaker, and hot tubs need a GFCI spa panel that mini-splits do not. A panel with no free two-pole space adds a breaker rearrangement or a subpanel.
When we would talk you out of it
- A 120 volt plug-in spa: it needs a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet on its own circuit, a smaller job than a 240 volt run, and we quote it that way.
- A panel that cannot carry the load: a 50 amp spa circuit on a full 100 amp service is a load calculation problem first, and the answer may be a service upgrade.
- The mechanical side of the mini-split: we do not set units, run line sets, or charge refrigerant. Your HVAC installer does that.

What size circuit does a hot tub need?
